The Journey to Know God

In a book about Micmac folklore, called On the Trail of Elder Brother: Glous'gap Stories of the Micmac Indians , is this description of their culture hero, Glous'gap: "God is called Gitji Manitou (the Great Spirit) or Nigsam (Holy Grandfather) or Kesoulk (The Creator), and Glous'gap is the embodiment of his power. It is he who moves about on the earth and who has direct dealing with people and animals. Our stories tell us that Glous'gap cannot live without the people, nor can we live without him. He is our spiritual teacher, the ultimate warrior, medicine person, and occasional trickster. Some say he is a spirit; others think he is human. In any case, the things Glous'gap says and does are models for the way our people approach life." Similar to the Covenant of Christ (specifically 3 Nephi 5 ), this book describes Micmac traditions about this individual, Glous'gap, having lived among them for a time, and of his role in teaching humans how to live ...

All things Common Among Them

I've been reading  Legends, Traditions, and Laws of the Iroquois, or Six Nations, and History of the Tuscarora Indians , by Elias Johnson. It has been a fascinating read so far, written by a Tuscarora man in 1881 about his tribe and from their perspective. I've particularly found his comparison to Catholic barbarism and that attributed to the Native Americans as enlightening. I recently also came across this passage: "They knew nothing of the desire of gain, and therefore were not made selfish by the love of hoarding; and there was no temptation to steal, where they had everything in common, and their reverence for truth and fidelity to promises, may well put all the nations of christendom to shame." p.11 The current culture of America is based on possession, on having and getting things. More. Fancier. Bigger. Better. And this has toxic results. It leads to covetousness, jealousy, greed, pride, and inequality. As the author points out, this is not the way true ...

Where Prophecies Run Together: Part 2 (This is also Re-creation and Rebirth: Part 4: Turtle Island)

Image
I ended  Part 1  of the Seven Fires Prophecies topic with a note that there was more I hadn't addressed and that I had yet to understand how to explain. I think I am ready to do this now. This post also is Part 4 of my Re-creation and Rebirth series that I began with. It was originally going to be titled Turtle Island. Both these topics run together here, though, so they have been combined. The complete combined seven prophecies can be found in the video link in part 1, in Edward Benton Banai's The Mishomis Book , or found on different internet sites, including  this wikipedia page . One important part I have noticed in the prophecies begins in the very first prophecy. "In the time of the First Fire, the Anishinabe nation will rise up and follow the sacred shell of the Midewiwin Lodge. The Midewiwin Lodge will serve as a rallying point for the people and its traditional ways will be the source of much strength. The Sacred Megis will lead the way to the chosen ground...

Where Prophecies Run Together, The Seven Fires Prophecy: Part 1

Image
The Anishinabe people have a set of seven sacred prophecies they call the Seven Fires. They explain that seven prophets came to them and delivered the prophecies at a time they were living peacefully on the shores of north-eastern North America. Each of the prophecies given by the Anishinabe prophets is referred to as one of the seven "fires." Below I will compare passages of the Anishinaabe Seven Fires Prophecies to other scriptural prophecies. The versions of the Seven Fires that are quoted below all came from The Mishomis Book, by Edward Benton-Banai. I'll link online sources for the Seven Fires at the bottom. All the red highlighting in the quoted material is added by me. Other than that, the quotes should be the same as the materials they were taken from. *A description of the people that the Covenant of Christ refers to as "gentiles" in the quoted material below: They were originally divided by "many waters" from the people in the Americ...

The Lost Role of Women

Image
Isaac blessing Jacob, while Rebekah guards the door for her chosen heir A few months ago, I listened to a conference which I have linked to before, where what follows below was said in reference to the holy women in the bible. It is a detail that is mostly overlooked and I appreciated this explanation of it. " By me kings reign and princes decree justice. By me princes rule and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.  Never doubt this claim by the Divine Mother. She knows best the strengths and weaknesses of Her sons. She decides who will be made kings. The earliest generations knew this about Her. In the beginning it was the mothers who decided between sons..." By me kings reign and princes decree justice.
